Literis: A Bookshelf Designed for Versatile Storage

A Unique Blend of Functionality and Aesthetics

Eckhard Beger's Literis bookshelf offers a stylish and practical solution for organizing books, magazines, and large drawings. Inspired by stair-shaped geometric ornamentations, this design stands out with its unique layout and contrasting materials.

Literis, designed by Eckhard Beger for ArteNemus, is not your ordinary bookshelf. It is specifically crafted to accommodate books of various sizes, ranging from 20cm to 60cm, as well as magazines and large drawings. The shelves and dividers follow a stair-shaped graphic pattern, adding an intriguing visual element to the piece.

One of the standout features of Literis is its versatility. The bookshelf's design allows for the storage of books, magazines, and large prints, making it a multifunctional piece of furniture. The highest and lowest compartments are perfect for housing large drawings or posters, while the other shelves can hold books of different dimensions.

The construction of Literis showcases the designer's attention to detail. The structure is made from high-quality plywood covered with a maple veneer, giving it a sleek and sophisticated appearance. To further enhance the aesthetic appeal, ebony marquetry patterns are inlaid on all faces of the bookshelf, creating a striking contrast against the light maple veneer.

Another advantage of Literis is its modular design. The bookshelf comes in three different widths, allowing it to fit seamlessly into rooms of various sizes. Multiple units of Literis can also be combined to create a larger storage solution, with the ornamental pattern continuing and becoming more pronounced.

The design process for Literis involved careful research and analysis. The spacing of the shelves was determined based on an analysis of the book collection of a city library, ensuring that the compartments would accommodate real books of different heights. This combination of functionality and aesthetics was a challenge for the designer, but the end result is a bookshelf that is both visually appealing and practical.

Literis has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Artist of the Year award at the London International Creative Competition in 2016. In addition, it won the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017, showcasing its excellence and creativity in the field.

Eckhard Beger's Literis bookshelf is a testament to the fusion of art, design, and functionality. With its unique layout, versatile storage options, and attention to detail, it is a standout piece that adds both style and practicality to any space.
